Fourth Annual Archaeology Dig Begins

This is our fourth summer with students, ages 10 - 13, volunteers and archaeologists sifting through Newaygo County's buried past in search of answers to questions about life here long ago. We have explored sites in Newaygo, Hesperia, and White Cloud. This year, four landowners in Grant Township gave us permission to dig on their property with the 18 youngsters who enrolled.

Our program is one of the few authentic youth archaeology programs in Michigan in which National Forest Service archaeologists teach proper digging techniques and careful handling of artifacts to youngsters.

Visit our Archaeology Fair on Friday, June 23, from 2 - 3 PM, to discover what this year's archaeology participants learned about the very early inhabitants of the Rice Lake area. Everyone Welcome!!
