Archaeology Dig - Day 3

Our third day, Wednesday, began with a weather warning for tomorrow. With heavy rain predicted for 4 AM on Thursday continuing into the day, we decided to dig all day today, rather than the planned half day. That allowed us to finish the units we had begun and be ready to clean and research our finds tomorrow.

Two units were finished quickly and those adults and students moved to a nearby location with one of the archaeologists. The rest stayed to finish off the extra digging needed to find as many Native American artifacts as possible.

A unit is closed when a depth is reached where the evidence of human activity ceases. We collected all the pieces we could until the soil being removed no longer produced any. Then the units were filled in and the paperwork was completed.

It was a long, tiring day for all of us, but so very rewarding with the information we gained!

If you'd like to see what we found and learn about our experiences, please come to our Archaeology Fair from 2 - 3 PM on Friday, June 23, at the Newaygo County Museum and Heritage Center!!
